Thank you for your Taskbar-Eliminator. It is the first tool that is working perfectly with Windows Vista Ultimate 64 Bit and ObjectDock! The nerv-wrecking "auto-hided-taskbar-comes-back-every-mouseclick" is history! Great work!
With Firefox browser, Ctrl + T is used for opening a new tab. I got so annoyed with TB-eliminator overriding Firefox, I had to quit using it.
Please, make the keyboard shortcut configurable!
Hi Jaska!
Taskbar Eliminator has been updated, the shortcut is now Alt + T which shouldn't cause any issues for most people. Just let us know if you have a problem with it:)
Thanks!
works perfectly! :)
one question though, is there a way i could assign another key or key combination (i.e. alt+F12) to launch the start menu instead of the windows button?
thanks,
ryan
i don't use the hotkey approach as much as i like to toggle the status of the taskbar. would you consider adding a command line option to quit the program after execution, rather than having it running in the background?
so then we could run Taskbar Eliminator, it would toggle the status (if currently hidden, change to show; and vice versa). then the program quits automatically (without having to go to the preferences and clicking "exit").
cheers :)
thanks for the comment. i want to "hide" the start menu though. quitting the Task Eliminator doesn't "hide" the start menu (through the windows button) from the user.
i want to use this program in an internet cafe and i want to limit access of the user to the start menu :)
i can always remove the "windows" button physically from the keyboard if there is no option to change this. it's a nice feature though if implemented..
Hi,
@Ryan: I'm not sure if you thought 'guest' was an Aviassin admin replying?:) We could provide a customized version of TB Eliminator for you for $10 US if you are interested. It could automatically disable the taskbar on startup, provide a more complex hotkey to show it again, and disable the windows button and start menu. Let us know if you are interested:) Thanks!
@guest: That is technically possible, not by the command line, but we could have Taskbar Eliminator change the status of the taskbar then exit. You could then open TB Eliminator again to show the taskbar. The problem with that is the majority of users like to have the option to quickly toggle the taskbar on then off again for whatever reason. If you were really interested, we could provide a customized version for you for our usual $10 US:)
Thanks!
Hi Admin,
Nope, i didn't think it was an Aviassin admin replying to me. :)
I landed on this site because i want to be able to restrict access to the users to the start menu and taskbar. I will just provide links to common applications used in the cafe through desktop folders, thus minimizing threats and less work for me (hopefully). :)
The windows button is easily accessible and can easily be mistaken as the ALT or CTRL key by the user/gamers and once pressed, it will show the start menu giving them access again which is what i'm trying to avoid.
Hmm.. i will check with my boss if if he's willing to shell out $10 :)
Nice application though and the VERY fast response from you is really appreciated..
Thanks Again,
Ryan
@Ryan:
Sure, we've created a number of customized versions for people like you who need specific restrictions from users on the taskbar and start menu. Hope to hear from you soon:)
Thanks,
Could you make the Eliminator toggle autohide as well? T functionality I want is:
Drift over a corner, taskbar and Start button appears (with autohide Off), drift back over the corner, it eliminates (including the Start button, so with autohide On).
I've cobbled together a few individual tools to do that fairly simple thing and it woks very well.
But to do it, I have to use your Eliminator, another little tool called toggleTaskbarAutohide.exe, Autohotkeys to trigger them both, and another little app called Hot Corners2 to trigger it with a corner drift.
As I said, it works without a hitch, but not a very elegant setup. Could you get at least the autohide part integrated into the Eliminator? Or may the whole fuctionality?
Hi,
I don't really understand your request to be honest. Why do you want autohide to be toggled? If you simply wanted the taskbar to appear when you move your mouse to the bottom of the screen, why not just use autohide?
We could include the ability to toggle autohide, but I don't see why?
We could also make (in a custom build) Taskbar Eliminator toggle by moving your mouse to a corner of the screen if thats what you are after?
Thanks!:)
Autohide is annoying. It unhides when you least expect it anytime you drift your mouse anywhere near the border you have it on.
I want it to be either there, fixed, or not there at all. And the hot corner makes it very precise about where to drift the mouse to pop it up.
I've got it doing that with my setup, but I reckon there would be a lot of people who would like that too, but without having to do my fairly convoluted setup to get it.
This is especially good now with Windows 7. I use ObjectDock as my launcher, and the Taskbar for running tasks since it now works very well for that. I just pop up the windows taskbar (by drifting over my hot corner) when I want to see or use running tasks.
Hi Dal,
We'll look into it to see if its a possibility for a later version of Taskbar Eliminator. If not, feel free to contact us about a custom build and we'll see what we can do.
Thanks!
Personally, the custom build isn't necessary because I've got it working very well the way I want it.
But to do it, I've had to use mulitple tools. To set it up is complicated for what is, really, a quite simple piece of functionality:
go to hot corner - taskbar and Start orb disappear
go to hot corner again - taskbar and Start orb pop up fixed in place (ie autohide off)
I have put up my method on the RocketDock forum. http://rocketdock.com/addon/docklets/24881
That very simple function but with a quite complicated setup is what I think a lot of people would like if it were available in a single tool. Have it as a standard upgrade from your normal Eliminator at your normal $10 fee and I reckon you'd get lots of takers.
Hi,
I think I understand what you mean, but I do have some questions. If the the hot corner toggles autohide, doesn't this mean your icons are moved up on the desktop every time you toggle? Anyway, you essentially want moving the mouse to a corner to do the same as Alt + T does now?
Oh, and the method you put in the Rocketdock forum is slightly wrong in regards to Taskbar Eliminator. You don't need to 'install' TB Eliminator, just run it. It also doesn't automatically create a folder in Program Files. And you don't need to create a shortcut yourself, just Press Control+Alt+T and select 'Start With Windows'.
Thanks,
Ah yes. I forgot, I'd made the directory in Program files myself. I'll change the instructions.
With the taskbar on top or bottom, the only thing that happens when I toggle using the hot corner is that the taskbar glides into place on Show and glides out on Hide. If I have a maximised window, its size adjusts to accommodate the taskbar on show and fills to full screen on hide, but it does it quite smoothly. If the taskbar is on one of the sides, there is a visible jerky readjustment, but not a problem.
Actually, on hide, the taskbar itself doesn't glide away, it just immediately disappears, but because the Start orb glides away, it appears as if the whole taskbar does too since it's the Start orb that takes your eye as it subsides.
It's pretty cool actually.
Yes, the functionality is the same as Alt-T but with turning autohide on and off as well.
All I've done with my method is to use AutoHotkey to trigger Alt-T and F12. Alt-T is for your eliminator, F12 toggles autohide at the same time.
Well, actually a bit more complicated. Alt-T triggers your eliminator, F12 triggers autohide. So I do a vbs to trigger both at the same time, then HotCorners2 to trigger the vbs.
Much too complex. If you could do all that in one tool it would be so cool.
hi there. i haven't used this TE yet, but i've so far heard/read nothing but great things about it. i've been getting used to the happy days of rocket dock this past month, and so of course have been sniffing around (more extensively) for some way (that actually works) of eliminating the taskbar. this one seems to get the highest marks, for basic functionality and user support, so i'm looking forward to using it, if for nothing more than curiosity to see its design in action.
i still require the system tray quite frequently, so i've taken to just moving my taskbar over to the right side of my screen, auto-hiding it, and keeping rocket dock auto-hidden on the bottom. happy days. works beautifully for my purposes, but i fully understand the desire and pursuit of getting rid of the taskbar altogether.
the reason i've gotten into all this auto-hide stuff is because over the past couple months i've discovered the joy of using firefox in fullscreen mode. with rocket dock available but out-of-sight on the bottom, my address bar and search enging bar along with bookmarks toolbar and tabs bar (if more than one) all auto-hidden, every inch (pixel) on my screen is dedicated to my surfing. it's absolute bliss. (especially when you stumble upon sights like the homepage for Alvaro Puentes Photography — stumbled across it last night, while in fullscreen, and actually gasped. simple black and white photo, but uninterrupted by anything else on the screen. wonderful.)
the reason i'm mentioning all this is: when firefox is in fullscreen mode, the taskbar is nowhere to be found. now, maybe it's a fluke of my system setup (FF 3.5.5, xp sp3, etc), but no matter what the taskbar is set to (auto-hide, normal, locked or unlocked), as long as firefox is the active application and in fullscreen mode, i can't access or bring up the taskbar unless i use the windows key to pop up the start menu. (very much like the desired functionality of this "working" and other, let's say "imitation" taskbar eliminators.)
not that i don't appreciate the development of such a useful tool — as do several others, judging by the positive comments here and on the old KaneBT site — but i just wanted to mention, since i haven't seen it mentioned anywhere else, that, if firefox has this kind of "power" to 'disable' the taskbar completely while active in fullscreen, surely there must be some basic little toggle in the explorer shell to allow for this. and hey, what do i know, maybe that's the very toggle that this handy little TE app here exploits/uses/impliments.
either way, keep up the great work. you're obviously making a lot of people's dreams come true.
just wanted to throw my 2 cents in.
C.
Hi,
@Dal: Okay, I see what you mean now:) Thanks a lot for your suggestions, we'll certainly look into it for our next update!
@Chris:Thanks! It means a lot that our users take time to say thanks:) In regards to the Firefox trick, I haven't heard of it before, but thats very interesting. I'll check it out!
Thanks!
I shall look forward to it.
In the meantime, my method works like a treat for me, but a bit complicated for others unless they REALLY want this trick to work.
But I still reckon that, if it were in one tool, a lot of people would go for it.
Cheers
Aviassin,
I've been mucking around with this and have done an autohotkey to do it. Take a look here if you are interested:
Hi Dal,
We did create the same feature you outlined, using a 'hot corner' (or even hot side) to toggle the taskbar, we also incorporated the 'sliding taskbar' effect when it is hidden or shown. Frankly however, we can't see a real need for it in the basic TB Eliminator app, and you seem to have solved your issue yourself. We might offer it as a Custom Build in the future though. Good to hear you've solved your problem! :)
